Etymology
φονικός is built from φόνος, the Greek word for murder or slaughter, plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, which means "pertaining to" or "characterized by." φόνος itself goes back to the PIE root for striking or killing. The same root produced words for killing and slaying across several old Indo-European languages.
