Etymology

Τίγρη comes from ancient Greek τίγρις, a word the Greeks borrowed from an Iranian language when they encountered the animal in the East. The same Iranian source also gave the Tigris river its Greek name. From Greek τίγρις, the word passed into Latin as tigris and then spread through most of Europe.
