Etymology

Ανταλλαγή is built from the verb ανταλλάσσω, itself αντί (in return for, against) plus αλλάσσω (to change, to alter). The suffix -ή turns the verb into an abstract feminine noun, so the word literally means the act of changing something in return for something else. The root αλλ- goes back to Ancient Greek άλλος, other.
