Etymology

Γουστάρω is built from the noun γούστο, meaning taste or style, which Greek borrowed from Italian gusto during centuries of trade and contact, especially through the Ionian Islands and Venetian-ruled ports. Italian gusto itself goes back to Latin gustus, taste. Greek turned the borrowed noun into a verb with the common loan-verb suffix -άρω, which mirrors the Italian infinitive ending -are. The result is an everyday colloquial verb for liking or fancying something.
