Etymology
φόρος comes from the verb φέρω, meaning to carry or bring. In classical Greek it first meant tribute, a payment that allied or subject states carried to a dominant power, most famously the annual tribute paid to Athens by members of the Delian League. Over time the word narrowed to its modern sense of a state tax. The root φερ- appears with an o-grade vowel shift in φορ-, a common pattern in Greek noun formation.
