Etymology

Σύγκρουση is a noun built from the verb συγκρούω, which combines the prefix συν- ("together, with") and the verb κρούω ("to strike, to knock"). Before κ, the ν of συν- assimilates to γ, giving the form συγ-. Literally the word means "a striking together," a sense that covers both physical crashes and clashes of ideas or interests. The root κρούω itself has no securely reconstructed Indo-European origin, so no PIE root is given here.
