ψεύτικος is a everyday Modern Greek adjective built from ψεύτης, 'liar,' plus the adjective-forming suffix -ικος, roughly 'characterized by.' ψεύτης itself comes from the verb ψεύδομαι, 'to lie, deceive,' the same root behind Ancient Greek ψευδής, 'false,' which gave English the prefix pseudo-. The deeper origin of ψεύδομαι is debated, and some scholars treat it as a pre-Greek word rather than inherited Indo-European vocabulary, so no secure root is given here.
