Etymology

The word joins the prefix αντί, meaning against or in place of, to πρόεδρος, meaning president or chairperson. Πρόεδρος itself comes from προ- (before) and έδρα (seat), so it literally names someone who sits at the front. Αντιπρόεδρος therefore names the person who sits in that seat instead, when the president cannot.
