Etymology
The word entered Greek as a direct loan from English "Apache", the name used for a group of Native American peoples of the American Southwest. The English name itself likely comes from a Zuni or Yavapai word applied to these peoples, not from an Indo-European source. From the ethnonym, Greek also borrowed the name for the American AH-64 Apache attack helicopter, and developed a colloquial phrase, παίζω τον απάτσι, meaning to act tough or wild, based on stereotypical film portrayals of Apache warriors.
