Etymology
The word comes from the verb απαγορεύω, formed from the prefix από- (away, against) and αγορεύω (to speak publicly, to declare before an assembly). Αγορεύω in turn derives from αγορά, the public assembly or marketplace, so the original sense of the verb was to publicly declare something off limits. The noun απαγόρευση, built with the deverbal suffix -ση, names the resulting act or state of forbidding.
