Απαγορεύω descends from ancient Greek ἀπαγορεύω, a compound of the prefix ἀπό (away, off) and ἀγορεύω (to speak in the public assembly). Ἀγορεύω itself comes from ἀγορά, the word for the assembly or marketplace where citizens gathered to speak. In antiquity the compound could mean both to renounce something and to forbid it by public proclamation. Modern Greek narrowed the meaning to prohibition alone.
