Etymology
Αυτοκίνητο is a compound built from αυτός, meaning self, and κίνητος, a verbal adjective of κινώ, meaning to move. It started as an adjective describing any self-propelled machine. By the early twentieth century, Greek speakers shortened the phrase αυτοκίνητο όχημα, self-moving vehicle, to just the neuter adjective form, and it became the standard noun for car.
