Etymology
Υποστηρίζω is built from the prefix υπό- (under) and the verb στηρίζω (to prop up, to fix firmly). Together they originally meant to hold something up from beneath, and the sense broadened over time to cover backing a person, an argument, or a cause. The root στηρίζω itself has a disputed origin, and some scholars treat it as a word Greek borrowed before the classical period rather than one built from an Indo-European root.
