Etymology
Υποστήριξη is built from the prefix υπό- (under) and στήριξη, the noun form of the verb στηρίζω, which means to prop up or hold firm. The word entered common use as Greek expanded its vocabulary for institutional and technical life, covering everything from a hand on the shoulder to a customer service line. The origin of στηρίζω itself is not securely traced to a Proto-Indo-European root; some scholars treat it as a word of pre-Greek substrate origin.
