Etymology

Πυρηνικός is built from πυρήν ("kernel, pit, nucleus") plus the adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning "pertaining to." The noun πυρήν originally named the hard stone at the center of a fruit, like a peach pit. Its further origin is not securely established, so no earlier root is given here. The word was extended in the 20th century to the nucleus of an atom, and πυρηνικός followed as the adjective for anything related to that nucleus.
