Etymology
Πυρήνας descends from ancient Greek πυρήν (πυρῆνος), which meant the stone or kernel of a fruit and was later used by writers like Aristotle for the core of other structures. Despite the visual resemblance, it is not derived from πῦρ (fire). Modern Greek kept the old meaning of fruit pit and added the scientific senses of atomic and cell nucleus in the 19th and 20th centuries.
