Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek ἀμφισβητέω, built from ἀμφί (on both sides) and a stem related to βαίνω (to step, to go). The literal sense was to take a stand on both sides of a question, which gave rise to the meaning to dispute or argue over something. Modern Greek kept the verb largely intact, and it now covers questioning, contesting, and doubting.
