Etymology

Πίνακας descends from ancient Greek πίναξ (genitive πίνακος), which meant a wooden board, plate, or tablet. Ancient Greeks used a πίναξ to write on, to serve food on, or to paint on, and all three senses survive in the modern word: classroom board, painting, and data table. The German loanword Pinakothek, meaning art gallery, comes from the same ancient root.
