Etymology

The verb comes from ανά (an intensifying prefix meaning up or again) added to μένω, the ordinary Greek verb for staying or remaining. Together they form a more formal word for staying in place until something happens. The base verb μένω traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root for remaining, the same root behind Latin manere. That Latin root later gave English words like remain and permanent.
