Αναμονή is built from the prefix ανα- (again, up) attached to a noun form related to the verb μένω, to remain or stay. The verb μένω descends from a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to remain or stay put. The same root gave Latin its verb for remaining, which passed into English through French and Latin borrowings.
