Etymology
Γιος is the everyday modern form of Ancient Greek υἱός, meaning son. Over centuries the word lost its old ending and gained a helping γ- sound in casual speech, which later became fixed in writing. Scholars do not agree on where υἱός itself comes from: some tie it to an old Indo-European word for son, others treat it as a word Greek absorbed from an earlier, unrelated language in the region. Because that deeper history stays unsettled, no single root is given here.
