Etymology
Αλτ entered Greek as a military loanword, most likely through Italian 'alt' or French 'halte', both of which trace back to German 'halt', the imperative of 'halten' (to stop, to hold). Greek picked it up in the 19th and 20th centuries through army drill and command vocabulary. It stayed frozen in form, first as a shouted command and later also as a neuter noun meaning 'a stop' or 'a halt'.
