Etymology
The word joins πολύ, meaning much or many, with a form of the verb πλέκω, to weave or plait. Together they describe something woven from many strands, which came to mean complicated. The same root πλέκω gives Greek πλοκή, a plot or weaving, and shows up in words about entanglement and knots.
