Etymology
The word joins the negative prefix απο- ("away from") with αίσιος, meaning "favorable" or "of good omen". Αίσιος itself comes from αίσα, the ancient Greek word for fate or one's allotted portion. So απαίσιος first meant "ill-omened" or "unfavorable", and over time its sense hardened into the everyday word for "dreadful" or "awful".
