Etymology

Γάτα entered Greek in the Byzantine period as γάττα, borrowed from Latin cattus/catta. The Latin word itself is not clearly Indo-European; it spread across the late Roman Empire from an unknown source, replacing older words for the animal in most European languages. Greek kept the borrowed form and adapted it to native noun endings.
