Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek περιοῦσα, the feminine present participle of περιεῖναι, meaning to be over and above or to remain in surplus. That verb is built from περί (around, beyond) and εἰμί (to be). Over time the sense of surplus narrowed to mean one's property or wealth, the material things that stand around and belong to a person.
