Etymology

Απεργία comes from the Ancient Greek ἀπεργία, formed from the privative prefix α- (not, without) and έργον (work), plus the abstract-noun suffix -ία. In antiquity the word meant idleness or lack of work. Modern Greek narrowed the meaning to an organized refusal to work: a labor strike.
