Etymology
The verb comes from Ancient Greek αὐξάνω, built on the root αὐξ- with the present-stem suffix -άνω, which many Greek verbs use to mark ongoing or developing action. Linguists trace the root to the Proto-Indo-European base for growth and increase. The same root produced Latin augere, which English later borrowed in words like augment and auction.
