The verb comes from Ancient Greek ἀφαιρέω, a compound of ἀπό ("away from") and αἱρέω ("to take, seize"). Modern Greek fused this into the single contracted verb αφαιρώ, keeping the core sense of taking something away, whether a number in a sum or an object or right in daily life. The origin of αἱρέω itself is disputed among specialists, so no secure Proto-Indo-European root is given here.
