Etymology
Βαρύτητα is built from the adjective βαρύς, meaning heavy, plus the abstract-noun suffix -τητα, which turns a quality into a noun, much like -ty does in English. The word first meant simply heaviness or weight, and later took on the scientific sense of gravity as well as the figurative sense of seriousness. Βαρύς itself goes back to a very old Indo-European word for heavy.
