Etymology
κατόπιν comes from ancient κατά (down, according to) joined with ὄπιν, the accusative form of ὄψ/ὄπις, meaning the back or rear part. Together they originally meant something like 'at the rear of' or 'behind', and the sense shifted over time to cover both spatial 'behind' and temporal 'after, following'. It belongs to the same family as ὀπίσω and ὄπισθεν, both meaning 'behind' or 'backward'. Today it survives mainly as a formal preposition in official and written Greek.
