Etymology

Φαΐ is the colloquial spoken form of φαγί, itself a shortened, informal derivative of φαγητό, the noun built on the root of the verb φαγείν, the aorist of τρώω, meaning to eat. In everyday speech the medial γ dropped out, so φαγί became φαΐ. The root φαγ- goes back to a Proto-Indo-European base meaning to share out or allot, a sense that shifted toward eating in Greek.
