Etymology
Τρελαίνω is a denominative verb built from the adjective τρελός, meaning crazy or mad, plus the verb-forming suffix -αίνω, which turns adjectives into causative verbs (compare κοντός, short, and κονταίνω, to shorten). The origin of τρελός itself is disputed among Greek etymologists, and no agreed Proto-Indo-European ancestor exists, so none is given here. The verb settled into everyday Modern Greek with both a causative sense, to make someone crazy, and a reflexive one, τρελαίνομαι, to go crazy or to be crazy about something.
