Etymology
Δολοφονώ is built from δολοφόνος, a compound of δόλος (trick, deceit) and the root of φόνος (killing, murder). The verb literally points to killing carried out through treachery rather than open combat. This sense of hidden, calculated violence still colors the word today, which is why Greek reserves it for murder and assassination rather than killing in general.
