Etymology
Greek βαμπίρ is a direct borrowing of the international word vampire, which entered Western European languages in the early 18th century through German and French accounts of Balkan folklore. Those accounts drew on Serbian вампир (vampir), a term whose own origin is disputed among linguists, with proposed Slavic and Turkic roots but no settled answer. Greek adopted the word later as a modern loan rather than inheriting it from Ancient Greek, so it stays grammatically foreign: indeclinable, with a fixed form in singular and plural.
