Etymology

Μουστάκι comes from Byzantine Greek μουστάκιον, a diminutive of ancient Greek μύσταξ, meaning the upper lip or the hair on it. Venetian and Italian traders borrowed the Byzantine word as mustacchio, and it passed from there into French as moustache. English then borrowed the French form as mustache, so the Greek word essentially traveled abroad and came back into other languages as a loan rather than descending from a shared ancient root.
