Συνεδρία comes from the ancient verb συνεδριάζω, built from συν- (together) and έδρα (seat). The root sense is people sitting together to deliberate, the same image behind the related word συνέδριον, which passed through Hebrew as a loan and gave English Sanhedrin. Modern Greek kept the word for any formal meeting or sitting, from a court session to a single therapy appointment.
