προηγουμένως is the adverb form of προηγούμενος, the present participle of προηγούμαι, meaning to go before or precede. The verb joins the prefix προ- (before) to ηγούμαι, a form of ἡγέομαι (to lead, to guide, to consider). The ending -ως converts the participle into an adverb, giving the sense in a preceding manner, hence previously or beforehand.
