Etymology

Greek borrowed γάντι from Venetian Italian guanto during centuries of Venetian presence in the Greek-speaking world. The Italian word itself is a Romance adaptation of an earlier Germanic term for a hand covering. Greek then fitted the borrowing into its own neuter noun pattern, giving it the ending -ι and native declension.
