Διά descends from Ancient Greek διά, an old preposition meaning through or across. It is generally traced to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning apart or asunder, the same root that gave Latin its dis- prefix. In modern Greek the word survives mainly in formal writing, set phrases, and as the spoken word for the division sign.
