Etymology
The Greek noun δούκας comes from the Late Latin title dux, ducis, meaning leader or general, itself from the verb ducere, to lead. Byzantine Greek borrowed dux as a military rank for provincial governors, and it later settled into its familiar sense of hereditary noble title, duke. English took the same Latin word through French, which is why duke and δούκας sound related. δούκα is simply the genitive, accusative, or vocative singular form of that noun.
