Etymology
Φρικιό is modern Greek slang, not an inherited ancient word. It grew out of φρίκη, the ancient and modern noun for horror or shudder, blended with the sound of the English word "freak". Greek youth and rock or metal subcultures used it from the late twentieth century for someone whose look or behavior seemed shocking or outlandish, and the term has since been partly reclaimed as a proud self-label rather than only an insult.
