Etymology
Δόντι comes from the Ancient Greek diminutive ὀδόντιον, itself built on ὀδούς, ὀδόντος, the standard Greek word for tooth. Over time the unstressed initial vowel dropped, so ὀδόντιον became δόντι in spoken Greek. The underlying root goes back to a Proto-Indo-European word for tooth. English tooth and Latin dens, dentis descend from the same ancient root.
