Etymology

πειστικός comes from the verb πείθω, meaning to persuade, plus the adjectival suffix -τικός, which marks capacity or tendency, much like English -ive in persuasive. The verb πείθω is one of the oldest in Greek and also gives πίστις, meaning faith or trust. The underlying idea is bringing someone to trust or agree through argument.
