Etymology

Greek borrowed the word directly from English "tennis" in the twentieth century, along with the sport itself. English "tennis" in turn comes from Anglo-Norman French "tenez", the imperative "hold!" or "receive!", which servers called out before striking the ball. That French word descends from Latin "tenere", to hold. As a recent loanword, Greek treats it as an indeclinable neuter noun rather than fitting it into native declension patterns.
