Etymology

Ειρωνικός is built from the ancient noun ειρωνεία, meaning feigned ignorance or irony, plus the common Greek adjective suffix -ικός. Ειρωνεία itself comes from είρων, a person who understates or dissembles, best known from the Socratic pose of pretending not to know. The deeper origin of είρων is not settled among scholars, so no further root is given here. The word passed from Greek into Latin and then into English as ironic, which is why the English and Greek adjectives look so similar today.
