Etymology
Τρις descends from Ancient Greek τρίς, an adverb built on the same root as τρεῖς, the numeral three. The final sigma marks it as a multiplicative adverb, on the same pattern as ἅπαξ (once) and δίς (twice). It has survived largely unchanged into Modern Greek, though it now belongs to a formal or literary register rather than everyday speech.
