Etymology
Δημοκρατικός is built from δημοκρατία, itself a compound of δήμος (people, community) and κράτος (power, rule), with the adjectival suffix -ικός added to mean 'pertaining to.' The compound formed in ancient Athens to describe rule by the people, as opposed to rule by one man or a few. English borrowed the noun directly as 'democracy' and later coined 'democratic' on the same pattern.
