Word family
Etymology
The word comes from the verb εκκενώνω, itself built from the prefix εκ- (out, from) and κενός (empty). The suffix -ωση turns the verb into an abstract noun of action or result, so εκκένωση literally names the act of emptying something out. Modern Greek uses it for evacuating people from a place, but also for draining fluid in medicine or discharging electricity in physics.
