τέσσερεις descends from Ancient Greek τέσσαρες, the masculine and feminine form of the numeral four. That form traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root for four, which also produced numerals across most of the Indo-European family. Modern Greek kept a separate neuter form, τέσσερα, while τέσσερεις serves the masculine and feminine.
